Awarding department: East of England European Partnership
Grant value: The total indicative budget is EUR 52.5 million.
Description: The general objective of the call is to contribute to the progress/development in Audio Visual systems and applications in converged broadcasting and IP communications environments. Converged broadcasting involves combining various technologies such as the Internet and TV viewing. The convergence process refers to combining information technology, communications and media. The QoS (quality of service i.e. easy access through various types of devices for the end-user) has to be ensured despite complex interoperable environments and networks.
This call welcomes in particular projects in the following areas:
Research in the field of innovative end-to-end audio-visual and multimedia data handling from the content producer to the end-user of the multimedia content;
Research in the field of open and “scalable” audio-visual and home network architectures addressing one or more of the following aspects: synchronisation of different delivery channels; control issues associated with service delivery in both intra- and inter-domain operators' environments; management and control of the home network and services; local ad-hoc/sensor networking; session continuity and seamless connectivity and controls across the personal, home and extended home networks.
All research must address multi-technology integration and convergence of broadcasting, telecommunications and consumer electronic devices. It should take into consideration the “ease of use” for the end user, addressing user expectations for new and better audio-visual experiences.
The work should contribute to the development of international open/ interoperable standards. This is why participation of organisations from third countries is encouraged, especially from Asian and Latin-American emerging economies.

The approximate EU contribution to a project: EUR4-15 million. When selecting the projects the Commission will especially pay attention to the degree of integration and the joint programme of activities (16 to 20%) and also to: relevance (12 to 20%), potential impact (12 to 20%), excellence of the participants (12 to 20%), organization and management (12 to 20%).
